Acupuncture Therapy for Veterans

How to Start

Once the Veteran is assessed and determined eligible for the Veterans Choice Program, the VA issues the authorization to Health Net who then contacts me to schedule the appointment and provide me with an authorization for treatment. During the course of treatment, if additional treatments are needed, we work directly with Health Net for the authorization. We take care of it for you.

Veterans do NOT have to pay any copay or coinsurance at our clinic. Let your primary physician know that you are interested in using alternative treatments for your conditions. You can also call our office at 407-579-3142 or Health Net at 1-866-606-8198 to answer any of your questions.

The Veterans Access, Choice, Accountability Act (VACAA) of 2014 is a law that expands the number of options Veterans have for receiving care to ensure Veterans have timely access to high-quality care. Veterans Choice Program (VCP) provides primary care, inpatient and outpatient specialty care, and mental health care for eligible Veterans when the local VA medical center (VAMC) cannot provide the services due to:

1. Lack of available specialists.

2. Long wait times.

3. Extraordinary distance from the Veteran’s home.

Todd Gegerson, DOM, LAc. is a proud member of Health Net’s PCCC.

To use your Veteran’s Choice card for a PCCC provider, you must first receive a referral from your VA doctor. The VA doctor reviews your condition and your needs and makes an assessment of your eligibility for the Veteran’s Choice program based on the 3 criteria listed above. The most common referral is for chronic pain though I am more recently receiving referrals for Anxiety and PTSD.

Through this program, the referrals to me are for Acupuncture which is clinically proven effective for pain and anxiety to name a few. For more about Acupuncture, please see that section of THH's web site

Team Happy Healing is now offering acupuncture therapy five days a week at the Sajune in Baldwin Park near the VA.

In Boston :“We believe that acupuncture will bring a well-studied and well tolerated treatment of chronic pain disorders that expands our Veteran’s access to complementary medicine. Acupuncture will be a valuable component in the multidisciplinary approach to treat pain,” said Dr. Kay Leissner, Chief of Anesthesiology at VA Boston Healthcare System. “Our Veterans have been asking for acupuncture for a long time and we are proud to be the first VA to have been able to employ an acupuncturist.

NOW THH is caring for our Veterans in Orlando

Acupuncture therapy involves inserting very fine needles at a variety of points in the body, and has been shown to be effective in treating symptoms resulting from a wide range of conditions. It has long been known to activate endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers. Acupuncture may be effective for patients who suffer from:

Pain associated with an injury or illness

Nausea and vomiting after an operation

Nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy

Knee pain from osteoarthritis

Low back pain

Depression or other mental health concerns

Substance dependency

This therapy will be administered by acupuncturist Todd Gegerson, who has been practicing for 13 years. He attended the Florida College of Integrative Medicine where he received his certificate in 2005. Since September 2000 he has also served as Assistant Professor and Clinical Supervisor for FCIM, Orlando FL where he still currently teaches and supervises students and acupuncture clinics.

One of the Boston projects is entitled “The Effectiveness of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Gulf War Illness” and is being sponsored through the New England School of Acupuncture and the Department of Defense.

Team Happy Healing will focus on the treatment of pain in Veterans. We believe in effectiveness of treating pain by acupuncture with no side effects. Acupuncture will lessen the needs for pain medication for a select group of patients

The acupuncture clinic will be held five days a week. If you are a Veteran who is interested in learning more about acupuncture therapy please contact your Primary Care Physician for additional information.
